MacBook Pro M6: A Short-Lived Generation Before the M7 Redesign

Apple’s MacBook Pro roadmap is taking an unusual turn. The company is expected to release an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip in late 2026, but the generation will be short-lived. Apple is reportedly skipping M6 Pro and M6 Max variants entirely, jumping straight to M7 chips in early 2027, with a redesigned chassis and OLED display.
The M6 Entry-Level Model
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple finished work on a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip « months ago » and expects to launch it before the end of 2026. The device will likely be indistinguishable from the current model externally, retaining the same chassis introduced in 2021. The M6 chip itself is expected to be built on TSMC’s 2nm process, with an updated memory architecture, an upgraded Neural Engine, and a redesigned GPU with up to 12 cores. MacRumors reported that the base M6 could have around 200GB/s memory bandwidth, up from 153GB/s on the base M5.
What makes this launch unusual is that Apple apparently has no plans for M6 Pro or M6 Max chips. Gurman stated that Apple had been planning major neural-processing upgrades for the M7 family and « ultimately decided those improvements were important enough to justify » accelerating the timeline. This means the high-end MacBook Pro models will either stick with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips longer than usual, or wait for the M7 redesign.
The M7 Redesign: OLED, Touchscreen, and a Thinner Chassis
The real overhaul is scheduled for the first half of 2027. Gurman reported that the M7 MacBook Pro will feature a new design « in line » with what Apple plans for its high-end OLED touchscreen models. Ming-Chi Kuo added that the redesigned laptop will be thinner and lighter, with a tandem OLED display replacing the current mini-LED panel.
The most controversial rumored feature is a touchscreen. Macworld reported that Apple has overcome its long-standing opposition to touch on the Mac, with the first touchscreen MacBook Pro expected as part of the 2026/2027 redesign. The display would use on-cell touch technology to keep the panel thin while supporting multi-touch input. Other rumored features include a Dynamic Island-style camera cutout replacing the notch, and potentially built-in 5G cellular connectivity using Apple’s own modem.
A Crowded Roadmap
The overlapping releases make for a confusing product matrix. Across roughly a year, Apple is expected to ship: a base M6 MacBook Pro in late 2026, a redesigned base M7 model in early 2027, high-end M5 Pro/M5 Max models (possibly rebranded as « MacBook Ultra »), and eventually M7 Pro/M7 Max successors in late 2027. GSMarena summarized that the MacBook Ultra with OLED touchscreen is « on track for release between the end of this year and early next year, » powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
For buyers, the message is mixed. If you need a MacBook Pro now, the current M5 models remain solid. If you can wait, the late 2026 M6 entry-level offers a chip upgrade without design changes. The truly significant redesign, however, is not coming until 2027.
