iPad Mini 8: Apple’s First OLED Mini Gets a 60Hz Panel and a Price Hike

The iPad mini is overdue for an update. The current iPad mini 7 launched in October 2024, making it nearly two years old by the time the next model is expected to arrive. The iPad mini 8 is widely rumored to be Apple’s first small-format tablet with an OLED display, but recent leaks suggest the upgrade will come with a significant compromise: the panel may be capped at 60Hz, with no ProMotion adaptive refresh rate.
OLED, But Not ProMotion
The transition from LCD to OLED for the iPad mini has been rumored for over a year. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that the small-form-factor tablet is likely to be the next Apple device to adopt OLED after the iPad Pro made the switch in May 2024. However, a leak from Korean tipster Yeux1122, posted on the Naver blog in July 2026, claimed the iPad mini 8 would use a 60Hz 8.4-inch LTPS hybrid OLED panel.
This matters because Apple’s iPad Pro models use two-stack LTPO OLED panels, which enable ProMotion (adaptive refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz). LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) panels are typically paired with fixed refresh rates and are dimmer than LTPO alternatives. MacRumors noted that while this is disappointing for iPad mini fans, it aligns with Apple’s approach on the iPhone 17e, which also uses a 60Hz OLED panel.
The screen size may also increase slightly, from 8.3 inches to 8.4 or even 8.7 inches, thanks to slimmer bezels enabled by the OLED technology.
Chip Uncertainty: A19 Pro or A20 Pro?
The processor situation for the iPad mini 8 is less clear than the display. In August 2025, Apple mistakenly shared code revealing a next-generation iPad mini with the A19 Pro chip. That chip has since debuted in the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro models. However, a MacRumors tipster who analyzed a macOS kernel debug kit claimed the codenames point toward the unreleased A20 Pro chip instead.
The A20 Pro is expected to be fabricated on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process and will power the iPhone 18 Pro series. If the iPad mini 8 launches in late 2026 after the iPhone 18 Pro debut, an A20 Pro would be plausible. If it arrives earlier, the A19 Pro is more likely. Either way, both chips represent a substantial upgrade over the current A17 Pro.
Design and Durability
Gurman reported that Apple is working to give the iPad mini 8 a more water-resistant design. The updated casing would bring protection levels closer to the iPhone. To achieve this, Apple is said to have designed a new vibration-based speaker system that eliminates the need for traditional speaker holes, reducing potential entry points for water and dust. A 2014 Apple patent outlines a « mechanically actuated panel acoustic system » that vibrates flat surfaces to generate sound, effectively turning parts of the device’s chassis into a speaker diaphragm.
The front-facing camera may also move to the landscape edge, following the pattern of recent iPad models, to improve the video call experience when used with a keyboard or stand.
Pricing and Release Window
The iPad mini has had a $499 price tag since its 2021 redesign, but Apple raised the starting price of the iPad mini 7 to $599 in 2024. With an OLED display and potentially a newer chip, the iPad mini 8 could see another price increase. GSMarena reported that the OLED iPad mini may be more expensive than the current model.
Gurman has said the OLED iPad mini is scheduled for an October 2026 release. Korean outlet ETNews claimed in late June that mass production was already underway at a Samsung factory. If that timeline holds, the iPad mini 8 would arrive roughly two years after its predecessor, fitting Apple’s increasingly erratic update cycle for the small tablet.
