Meta Connect 2026 Will Tease a New Ultralight MR Headset, But the Quest 4 Remains Distant

Meta has confirmed that its annual Connect developer conference will take place on September 23 and 24, 2026. The event is expected to focus on AI, smart glasses, and a new category of mixed-reality hardware that Meta has been developing in parallel with its Quest line. What is not expected is a Quest 4. The next-generation standalone VR headset has been pushed back to at least late 2027, and possibly 2028, as Meta restructures its hardware roadmap around lighter, more wearable devices.
The Ultralight Headset: Phoenix, Puffin, or Something Else
Meta has been working on an ultralight mixed-reality headset for over a year. The device, which has carried multiple internal codenames including Phoenix and Puffin, is designed to be worn like a pair of glasses rather than a ski mask. According to UploadVR, the headset will feature a compute puck that clips to the user’s clothing or sits in a pocket, connected to the glasses via a cable. This offloads processing and battery weight from the head, allowing the glasses themselves to remain slim.
The device is expected to cost under $1,000, positioning it between the $299 Quest 3S and the $499 Quest 3, but with a fundamentally different form factor. It will support mixed reality through passthrough cameras rather than transparent optics, and will likely run a modified version of Horizon OS. Road to VR reported that the headset is distinct from the Quest line and represents Meta’s attempt to create a daily-wearable AR device before true augmented reality glasses are ready.
Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth confirmed in a late 2025 interview that the company had restarted development on two new headset projects after canceling prototypes codenamed Pismo Low and Pismo High in mid-2025. The Pismo prototypes were reportedly too heavy and too expensive to manufacture at scale. The restart, which began in December 2025, has focused on reducing weight and cost while maintaining the core mixed-reality experience.
No Quest 4 Until 2027 or 2028
The Quest 4, which many had expected to see at Connect 2026, is not coming this year. UploadVR reported that Bosworth stated the next Quest headset would not arrive until 2027 at the earliest, and possibly 2028. The delay reflects both the technical challenges of improving on the Quest 3’s already solid foundation and Meta’s strategic shift toward the ultralight form factor.
The Quest 3, released in October 2023, remains Meta’s flagship standalone headset. The Quest 3S, a budget variant launched in late 2024, has taken over the entry-level segment. Without a Quest 4 on the horizon, Meta’s hardware story for 2026 is entirely about smart glasses and the new ultralight headset.
Smart Glasses and AI
Meta is also expected to detail updates to its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses line at Connect 2026. The current second-generation glasses, launched in late 2023, have sold over 2 million units and are widely considered the most successful AI wearable to date. New features, including a display for notifications and navigation, are rumored for a 2027 refresh.
The Connect keynote will likely emphasize how Meta’s AI assistant, powered by Llama models, integrates across its hardware portfolio. With Apple pushing Siri AI and Google advancing Gemini on Android, Meta sees its glasses and headsets as the primary distribution channel for its AI products.
