DJI Matrice 5: Leaked Photos Show Integrated LiDAR and a Five-Window Gimbal

On July 26, 2026, Russian drone watcher Igor Bogdanov posted photos on X of what appears to be DJI’s next compact enterprise drone. The images show a gray airframe with folding arms, tall landing gear, a dome-shaped module on top of the fuselage consistent with LiDAR, and a gimbal with five separate sensor windows. Bogdanov has a documented track record: he identified the Matrice 400A months before its FCC filing and published accurate Matrice 4 specifications ahead of that platform’s January 2025 launch. DJI has confirmed nothing.

What the Photos Show

The most significant detail is the rounded dome mounted on top of the fuselage, which DroneXL interpreted as a factory-integrated LiDAR unit. On the current Matrice 4 series, LiDAR-based obstacle sensing requires the Obstacle Sensing Module, a $2,075 add-on that became compatible with the full Matrice 4 lineup through an August 28, 2025 firmware update. The dock-based Matrice 4D and 4TD launched with a similar payload combining LiDAR and millimeter-wave radar. If the dome is indeed integrated LiDAR, DJI would be folding a capability it currently sells separately into the standard airframe.

A second module visible on the top deck, a short cylinder near the front, resembles a built-in RTK antenna for centimeter-level positioning. On the Matrice 4E and 4T, RTK also requires an external module.

The gimbal carries five distinct sensor windows arranged across two rows, alongside a polished lens that resembles the laser rangefinder on current thermal models. The Matrice 4T already carries a wide-angle camera, a medium telephoto, a 168mm telephoto, a thermal camera, and a laser rangefinder. A five-window array would match that count but could represent different sensor types. Some coverage has speculated about a multispectral sensor for agriculture or a higher-resolution thermal core for public safety, but the photos do not confirm either.

What Is Not Known

Nothing in the leak establishes flight time, transmission range, weight, sensor resolutions, or launch timing. The Matrice 4 series arrived in January 2025, making an 18-month successor cycle plausible but unproven. The photos show protective tape and manufacturing labels, indicating the unit is in field testing rather than final production.

The US Market Problem

The Matrice 5, if real, faces a significant barrier in the United States. The FCC added DJI to its Covered List on December 22, 2025, blocking new equipment authorizations for DJI products. DJI has told the Ninth Circuit the designation blocks 25 planned 2026 product launches. The company has already skipped US launches for products like the O4 Wide Air Unit in June 2026.

Unless DJI secured FCC authorization for the Matrice 5 before the December 2025 cutoff, the drone will not be legally marketable in the US. American public safety agencies and inspection crews that standardized on the Matrice 4 platform would continue flying grandfathered hardware while paying $2,075 for bolt-on LiDAR modules that may be integrated into the overseas successor.

DJI’s Ninth Circuit challenge, Case 26-1029, is where the Covered List designation will be tested. If the designation survives, the Matrice 5 would be the first DJI enterprise flagship that American commercial pilots cannot buy.

Verdict

The leaked photos are credible but unconfirmed. Bogdanov’s track record gives them weight, but DJI has not acknowledged the product. The integrated LiDAR and RTK would represent a meaningful evolution for inspection and public safety operators who fly close to obstacles. The five-window gimbal suggests a denser sensor payload than the Matrice 4T, though the exact composition is unknown.

For buyers outside the US, the Matrice 5 is worth watching. For American operators, the more important story is the Ninth Circuit case. A drone with integrated LiDAR is useful. A legal framework that prevents its sale is a larger problem than any product specification.
