Huawei Pura X View: A 6.39-Inch Screen in a 201-Gram Body, and a Ratio No One Asked For

On August 20, 2026, Yu Chengdong, Huawei’s executive director and chairman of the consumer business group, walked on stage in China and unveiled a phone with a screen ratio that does not exist on any other smartphone. The Huawei Pura X View carries a 16:9.5 aspect ratio in a non-folding candybar body. Huawei calls it the world’s first « wide flat » smartphone. The rest of the industry calls it an experiment.

The Screen: 6.39 Inches, 1.05mm Bezels, 6,500 Nits

The display is the entire story. At 6.39 inches, the OLED panel measures 2232 by 1320 pixels. The aspect ratio is 16:9.5, which makes the phone noticeably wider than standard devices but shorter than the 21:9 cinema phones Sony used to make. Huawei claims the display area is 114.27 cm², larger than many 6.9-inch conventional phones because the width compensates for the shorter height.

The bezels are 1.05mm on all four sides, producing a 96.1% screen-to-body ratio. Peak brightness reaches 6,500 nits, which is among the highest figures claimed by any smartphone manufacturer. The panel supports 2,160Hz PWM dimming and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It is an LTPO2 OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Huawei’s marketing positions the device as “born for content”. The company lists four use cases: wide-sense viewing, wide-sense reading, wide-sense gaming, and wide-sense office work. The pitch is that video, documents, and games benefit from the extra horizontal space without requiring a foldable mechanism.

The Body: 6.68mm and 201 Grams

Despite the wide screen, the Pura X View is 6.68mm thick and weighs 201 grams. This is thinner and lighter than most flagship phones with comparable battery sizes. The rear panel uses a striped texture and a horizontal camera bar that resembles the Pura X Max foldable.

Four colors are available: Leap Shadow Red, Linen Gray, Zero Degree White, and Phantom Night Black.

The Battery: 7,000mAh in a 6.68mm Body

The most technically impressive specification is the battery. Huawei squeezed a 7,000mAh cell into a 6.68mm-thick body. This exceeds the capacity of the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra’s rumored 5,700mAh cell and approaches the size of batteries found in gaming phones. Charging is 66W wired, according to unofficial specifications compiled by MobileDokan. Huawei has not confirmed wireless charging capabilities.

The Chip and Memory

Huawei has not officially detailed the processor. Multiple sources, including MobileDokan and PhoneArena, cite the Kirin 9030S, a 5nm chip with an octa-core CPU and a Maleoon 935F GPU. The device ships with 12GB of RAM and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB. There is no microSD card slot.

The Cameras

Huawei has not published official camera specifications. A Weibo tipster cited by GSMarena claims the rear array consists of three 50MP sensors: a main wide lens, a telephoto, and an ultrawide. MobileDokan lists the same configuration. The front camera is reportedly 10.7MP. Video recording is listed as 4K. These specifications should be treated as unconfirmed until Huawei publishes full details on August 28, 2026.

HarmonyOS 7.0

The Pura X View is the first Huawei phone to launch with HarmonyOS 7.0 out of the box. Other Huawei devices are still receiving the update through beta programs. The operating system is Huawei’s alternative to Android, developed in response to US sanctions that cut the company off from Google services. HarmonyOS 7.0 includes optimizations for the wide-screen format, though Huawei has not detailed specific software features.

Availability and Pricing

The Pura X View opened for reservations in China on August 20, 2026. In-store experience sessions begin on August 28. According to Huawei Central, the first sale date is September 7, 2026.

The Huawei Pura X View is not a phone for everyone. The 16:9.5 aspect ratio will make one-handed typing difficult for anyone with smaller hands. It will not fit comfortably in all pockets. And it will not run Google apps outside China without workarounds.

But it is the most interesting hardware experiment in smartphones this year. Huawei has identified a real problem: content consumption on tall, narrow screens wastes horizontal space. Video is letterboxed. Documents require scrolling. Games show less of the environment. The Pura X View’s wider screen addresses this without the complexity, cost, and durability concerns of a foldable.

The engineering is remarkable. A 7,000mAh battery in a 6.68mm, 201-gram body is genuinely unusual. The 6,500-nit peak brightness is excessive but useful in direct sunlight. The 1.05mm bezels are among the thinnest ever shipped.

Whether this form factor succeeds depends on software. If app developers optimize for the wider screen, the Pura X View could establish a new category. If they do not, it becomes a niche device for Huawei enthusiasts. The lack of Google services outside China remains the fatal flaw for global adoption.

Huawei has built something no one else has tried. That alone makes it worth watching.
