Nothing Will Not Release a Flagship in 2026. Carl Pei Says the Annual Cycle Is Broken.
By OFOKI TECH | August 22, 2026
Carl Pei told Forbes in April 2026 that Nothing would not force a flagship launch in 2026. « I wouldn’t want to force having another flagship unless we had something we really wanted to bring out into the world, » he said. The company instead launched the Phone 4a and 4a Pro in March 2026, mid-range devices starting at £349. The Phone 3, released in July 2025, remains Nothing’s flagship for the year.
The Official Reason
Pei cited memory prices as a practical barrier. In a January 2026 video update, he warned that RAM prices were fluctuating by several hundred percent due to AI demand. A flagship phone in 2026 requires 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X to compete. At current prices, that memory costs significantly more than when the Phone 3 was designed.
By focusing on the 4a series, which uses 8GB or 12GB of cheaper LPDDR4X and a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chip, Nothing avoids the worst of the price spike. The Phone 4a Pro, at £499, carries a metal unibody, a 6.83-inch AMOLED display at 144Hz, and a 50MP periscope telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom. The standard Phone 4a, at £349, uses a polycarbonate frame and a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4.

The Design Consistency
Nothing maintains its visual identity across both devices. The Phone 4a replaces the full Glyph LED interface with a vertical Glyph Bar containing 63 LEDs. The 4a Pro uses a full Glyph Matrix with 137 LEDs. Pei told Forbes that if you put all Nothing products on a table and covered the logo, you could still identify the brand.
The Financial Context
Nothing achieved unicorn status in 2025, with revenue exceeding $1 billion. However, the Phone 3 has seen repeated price cuts. Amazon reduced the base model from $799 to $599 in March 2026. Best Buy followed with a $160 discount in May. Community discussions suggest the Phone 3 sold poorly in some markets, though exact figures are not public. One unverified claim suggested only 5,000 units sold in India.
Verdict
Nothing’s strategy is a bet that design and software matter more than specifications. For a subset of buyers, this is correct. The Phone 3 is one of the most distinctive devices available. But skipping a flagship cycle risks associating the brand with mid-range hardware. If Nothing does not release a competitive flagship in 2027, the company may find itself permanently positioned below Samsung, Google, and Apple.
The annual cycle is indeed exhausting. But it exists because consumers expect progress. Nothing’s challenge is to prove that pausing is not the same as falling behind.
