The Sinking City 2 Ditches the Open World for Tight Corridors and Survival Horror

By OFOKI TECH | August 12, 2026

The first Sinking City, released in 2019, was an open-world detective game set in a flooded Massachusetts town. It was ambitious, buggy, and buried under a legal dispute between developer Frogwares and publisher Nacon that delayed its release and complicated its distribution. The sequel, releasing on August 18, 2026, six days from now, is a different game entirely. It abandons the open-world structure in favor of a semi-open survival horror experience that draws directly from Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

From Investigator to Survivor

The first game put players in the role of Charles Reed, a private investigator who analyzed crime scenes and pieced together evidence in a mind palace. The sequel casts Calvin Rafferty, an occult adventurer whose girlfriend Faye is trapped in a mysterious sleep after a ritual goes wrong. Faye’s spirit inhabits a mask that Calvin carries, serving as his guide and advisor. The goal is to re-merge her spirit and physical form.

The shift in protagonist reflects a shift in genre. Calvin is not a detective. He is a survivor navigating the drowned streets of Arkham, a 1920s port city buckling under a supernatural flood. The game is third-person survival horror with deliberate, tense combat and resource management.

Combat and Exploration

Combat uses over-the-shoulder gunplay with 1920s-inspired weapons. Ammunition is limited. Inventory space is finite. Safe rooms offer manual saves and item storage, complete with gramophones playing haunting music. Crafting materials are scattered throughout the environment. Players use « dream essence » to unlock passive abilities, but only a limited number can be equipped at once.

The city is semi-open, with players using a boat to navigate flooded districts and docking at piers to explore on foot. Optional investigations and puzzles unlock safer routes, supplies, and upgrades but never gate main progression.

The Enemies

The primary threat is the Slither, worms that possess and reanimate the dead into lethal puppets. Deep Ones surge from dark water. Shadows bend space and test nerves. Some fights must be met head-on; others demand retreat to rearm and return better prepared.

Investigation as Optional Depth

Frogwares has not abandoned its detective roots entirely. The game includes an investigation bulletin board where Calvin connects documents to uncover lore and solve puzzles. Successfully connecting hints rewards points for character upgrades. One puzzle described by Rock Paper Shotgun involved arranging symbols on a monolith to match deities from Lovecraft’s mythology, requiring notes scribbled in a physical notebook.

Development Context

Frogwares is a Ukrainian studio based in Kyiv. The game was funded through Kickstarter, raising €554,002 from 6,181 backers against a €100,000 goal in March 2025. The release was delayed from late 2025 to the first half of 2026 to allow additional development time. The final release date is August 18, 2026.

Editions

The Standard Edition is $49.99 and includes the Chthonic Arsenal pack (three weapons). The Deluxe Edition at $54.99 adds the Arkham Field Kit. The Premium Edition at $59.99 includes Holloway Manor (a side area with a unique revolver) and 24-hour early access.
