Metal Gear Solid 4 Is Finally Leaving the PlayStation 3 After Eighteen Years
By OFOKI TECH | August 12, 2026
On August 27, 2026, Konami will release Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2. The bundle includes two games: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The former has never been ported to another platform. Since its release in June 2008, MGS4 has been trapped on the PlayStation 3, a console whose Cell processor architecture made porting notoriously difficult. The Master Collection Vol. 2 ends that exile.
The Technical Challenge
MGS4 was a technical marvel in 2008. It was also a performance disaster. Digital Foundry’s analysis of the original PlayStation 3 version revealed frame rates that would either hit 60fps (rarely) or plummet to 30fps, 20fps, and even 15fps, with constant hard jumps between these levels. The game used double-buffer v-sync, which caused jarring transitions. Early demos had shown a stable 60fps, but the final product could not maintain it on the hardware of the time.
The port to modern consoles targets 60fps throughout. Konami has confirmed improved internal resolution, increased maximum framerate, and customizable controls. However, some cutscenes appear to remain capped at 30fps, suggesting they may be repurposed video clips rather than real-time rendered sequences.
The port is also coming to the original Nintendo Switch, a device with roughly the same graphics power as the PS3 and a significantly less capable CPU. How Konami achieved this is unclear, and Digital Foundry has expressed particular interest in examining that version.
What Is Included
Vol. 2 comprises Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (the HD Collection version), and Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (the 2000 Game Boy Color title) as a digital bonus. The collection also includes Screenplay Books, Master Books, the Metal Gear Solid 4 Database rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, and Digital Soundtrack Vol. 2.
Multiplayer: Peace Walker Returns, Metal Gear Online Does Not
Konami confirmed that MGS4’s bundled Metal Gear Online mode will not return. The servers for the original MGO shut down in 2012, and reviving the infrastructure for a modern port was deemed too complex.
However, Peace Walker supports online multiplayer. Co-Ops mode allows two to four players to complete missions together. Versus Ops supports up to six players. Local wireless play is included for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Cross-play is not supported.
Save Data Bonuses
Players with save data from Master Collection Vol. 1 unlock the Gold Camouflage for MGS4 and the Gold Uniform for Peace Walker. Pre-orders get the Cardboard Camouflage for MGS4 and the Love Box uniform for Peace Walker.
Platforms and Pricing
The collection launches on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Individual purchases of MGS4 and Peace Walker are also available. The resolution and frame rate vary by platform: 1080p at 60fps on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC; 1080p at 30fps on Switch in TV mode.
