BMW iX3 Neue Klasse: The First True Neue Klasse SUV

BMW is preparing to launch the iX3 Neue Klasse, codenamed NA5, in 2026. The vehicle will be the first SUV built on BMW’s dedicated Neue Klasse electric architecture, distinct from the current iX3 which is essentially an electric conversion of the X3 combustion platform. Spy shots and patent filings have revealed a design that hews closely to the Vision Neue Klasse concept shown in 2023, with a radically simplified front end and a focus on aerodynamic efficiency.
A Dedicated EV Platform
The current iX3, sold primarily in Europe and China, uses BMW’s CLAR platform, which was designed to accommodate combustion, hybrid, and electric powertrains. The result is a compromised package with less interior space and efficiency than dedicated EVs like the Tesla Model Y or the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The Neue Klasse platform, which BMW first detailed in 2023, is designed exclusively for electric vehicles. It features a flat floor, a long wheelbase, and a battery pack integrated into the chassis structure. The NA5 iX3 will be the first SUV to use this architecture, following the Neue Klasse sedan (NA0) which is expected to debut earlier in 2026.
Design Language
Spy shots published by Bimmerpost and other BMW enthusiast forums show a vehicle with a radically simplified front fascia. The traditional BMW kidney grille is present but much smaller, flanked by slim LED headlights. The overall shape is more aerodynamic than the current X3, with a sloping roofline and a flat underbody.
The interior is expected to feature BMW’s new Panoramic Vision head-up display, which projects information across the entire width of the windshield, and a simplified center console with fewer physical controls than current BMW models.
Powertrain and Range
BMW has not released technical specifications for the NA5 iX3, but the Neue Klasse platform is expected to support battery packs ranging from 75kWh to 150kWh, with entry-level models targeting around 300 miles of EPA range and higher-end variants approaching 500 miles. The platform supports 800V charging, enabling DC fast-charging speeds of up to 350kW.
The iX3 Neue Klasse will likely be offered with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, with power outputs ranging from around 300 horsepower for the base model to over 600 horsepower for a potential M Performance variant.
Manufacturing and Market Position
The NA5 iX3 is expected to be manufactured at BMW’s plant in Debrecen, Hungary, which is being retooled specifically for Neue Klasse production. The plant will use BMW’s « iFACTORY » production system, which emphasizes digitalization, sustainability, and flexibility.
The iX3 Neue Klasse will compete directly with the Tesla Model Y, the Mercedes EQC successor, and the Audi Q6 e-tron. BMW has struggled to gain traction in the premium electric SUV segment with the current iX3, which has been criticized for its range and charging speed. The Neue Klasse version aims to address those weaknesses while maintaining BMW’s driving dynamics.
Pricing is expected to start in the mid-$50,000 range in the United States, undercutting the current iX but positioned above the Tesla Model Y Long Range.
