Huawei Is Moving the Mate 90 Launch to September to Fight Apple on Its Own Turf

For years, Huawei launched its Mate series in November. The Mate 80 arrived in late November 2025. The Mate 70 before it followed the same pattern. But this year, something changed. Multiple sources, including the well-connected Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, report that Huawei will hold two launch events in September 2026: the Mate XT 2 tri-fold in early September, and the Mate 90 series flagships later in the month. The move places Huawei directly in Apple’s launch window, a deliberate escalation in a rivalry that has been mostly one-sided since US sanctions cut Huawei off from Google services in 2019.

The Chip: Kirin 9050 Pro and LogicFolding

The centerpiece of the Mate 90 series is the Kirin 9050 Pro, a chip that Huawei claims will be the first mass-produced mobile processor to use what it calls LogicFolding architecture. The concept replaces traditional geometric miniaturization with vertical stacking. By bonding two layers of logic circuits together, Huawei aims to increase transistor density without relying on EUV lithography equipment, which remains blocked by US export controls.

The numbers Huawei has shared are aggressive. According to Baidu Baike, the Kirin 9050 Pro achieves a 53.5% increase in transistor density, a 37.5% reduction in chip area, and a 41% drop in power consumption at matching performance levels compared to the Kirin 9030 Pro in the Mate 80 series. The chip is manufactured by SMIC using DUV-level lithography, which makes the claimed performance particularly notable if it holds up in independent testing.

He Tingbo, head of Huawei’s semiconductor business, confirmed at ISCAS 2026 that the upcoming Kirin chips would adopt LogicFolding architecture. The commercial name is expected to be Kirin 9050 for the standard Mate 90 and Kirin 9050 Pro for the Pro, Pro Max, and RS variants.

The Spec Sheet

Leaks from Chinese social media have painted a detailed picture of the Mate 90 Pro Max. The device is expected to feature a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED flat display at 1.5K resolution with LTPO adaptive refresh rates. The battery capacity ranges from 6,800mAh to 7,000mAh, up from the 6,000mAh cell in the Mate 80 Pro Max. Charging speeds remain at 100W wired and 80W wireless.

The camera system reportedly includes a 200MP main sensor, which would be Huawei’s first use of a self-developed CMOS design rather than a third-party module from Sony or Samsung. The complementary sensors include a 40MP ultra-wide, dual 50MP telephoto lenses with up to 10x optical zoom, and a third-generation multispectral shooter. The front camera is a 15MP ultra-wide sensor with 3D face recognition.

The entire series is expected to ship with HarmonyOS 7, which entered developer beta in June 2026. For buyers outside China, the same limitation applies: no Google Play Store, no Gmail, no YouTube out of the box. Huawei’s AppGallery and sideloading remain the only options.

The Competitive Context

Huawei’s decision to advance the Mate 90 launch by two months is not just about the iPhone. Vivo is expected to launch the X500 series, OPPO the Find X10, and Xiaomi the 18 series, all in the same window. September 2026 is shaping up to be the most crowded flagship month in recent memory.

For Huawei, the stakes are particularly high. The company currently leads smartphone market share in China, but its global presence remains constrained by the absence of Google services. The Mate 90 is not just a product launch. It is a demonstration that Huawei can still compete at the bleeding edge of semiconductor design despite years of sanctions.
