S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope Adds Two Regions and a Faction War to a Game That Still Runs on Unreal Engine 5.1
By OFOKI TECH | August 20, 2026
GSC Game World released the first major story expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl today, August 20, 2026. The expansion, titled Cost of Hope, introduces two new regions, dozens of hours of quests, and a central conflict between the Duty and Freedom factions that runs parallel to the main campaign. It arrives alongside a free 2.0 update that moves the game from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5.4, the largest technical overhaul since the game’s launch in November 2024.
What the Expansion Contains
Cost of Hope is not a side quest. GSC Game World describes it as a full expansion that adds a storyline taking dozens of hours to complete. The player character, Skif, receives a signal on his PDA during a normal playthrough of Heart of Chornobyl that triggers the expansion’s narrative. This means the DLC is integrated into the existing campaign rather than accessed through a separate menu.
The two new regions are the Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Both areas were inaccessible in the base game. The Iron Forest is a maze-like industrial zone. The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant includes the RBMK reactor and surrounding facilities. Each region has its own hub and dozens of smaller locations with quests and activities.
The central conflict involves the Duty and Freedom factions. Duty views the Zone as a danger to humanity and wants it destroyed. Freedom sees it as a gift to be explored. The two groups are held together by the D4 Treaty, a pact signed before the events of Heart of Chornobyl. The expansion’s narrative begins when that treaty starts to fracture. The player’s decisions shape how the conflict resolves, with consequences for the Zone and its inhabitants.
New weapons, gear, mutants, anomalies, and human enemies are included. GSC has also confirmed that Zulu, a character from the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, returns in the expansion, as does Mavka, a member of Freedom.
The Free 2.0 Update
The 2.0 update launches today alongside the expansion and is free for all owners of the base game. Its primary change is the move from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5.4, a version jump that GSC committed to in its August 2025 roadmap. The update also adds new features independent of the paid DLC.
According to GSC’s Back to the Zone showcase, the update includes:
- Improved lighting, foliage, terrain, and reflections
- Dynamic fog and rain
- Three types of binoculars
- Four new weapons: the Fora, GP3A, SKP, and ARV
- Expanded A-Life activity, including faction territory battles and mutant attacks
- NPC artifact and mutant-part looting
- Custom difficulty settings for economy, AI, and mutant behavior
- A statistics page
- New bloodsucker variants and redesigned flesh mutants
The update also introduces Custom Rules, allowing players to adjust difficulty parameters including emissions, radiation, and psi exposure. An optional Expedition mode removes the compass and crosshair.
GSC has not published new system requirements for the 2.0 build. The existing specs remain the reference point, though the engine upgrade could shift GPU and memory demands.
Pricing and Editions
Cost of Hope is included in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Season Pass. The Ultimate Edition of the base game, priced at $109.99, includes the Season Pass and both planned story expansions. Players who own the Standard Edition can upgrade to Ultimate for approximately $54.99. GSC has not confirmed a standalone price for Cost of Hope, though estimates based on the Ultimate Edition pricing suggest around $20.
The expansion is available on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG), Xbox Series X/S, Xbox Cloud, and PS5. Both the base game and the DLC support Xbox Play Anywhere.
The Trilogy Structure
GSC has framed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 as a three-part « second trilogy. » Heart of Chornobyl is chapter one, Cost of Hope is the middle chapter, and a second expansion will close the arc. The studio has not announced a release date for the final expansion, though current coverage does not expect it before 2028.
