PlayStation 6 « Orion »: Zen 6, RDNA 5, 30GB of RAM, and a Price Tag That Terrifies Everyone

Sony has not announced the PlayStation 6. The company has not confirmed its existence, its codename, its release date, or even that it is in active development. Yet the volume of supply-chain leaks, silicon architecture reports, and analyst briefings surrounding the project has reached a point in 2026 where « Orion » is treated as an industrial fact. What the rumors describe is a console that could push the boundaries of home gaming — but at a cost that worries analysts as much as it does players.

The Silicon: Zen 6 and RDNA 5 on a Monolithic Die

The most detailed specifications come from leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead, who claims to know « with 100% certainty » that Sony will continue its partnership with AMD for the PS6. This continuity would guarantee backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 titles, a major strategic advantage. Reuters reported in September 2024 that Intel had lost the bid to design the PS6 chipset to AMD, precisely for compatibility reasons.

According to documents revealed by TweakTown, the « Orion » APU would be a 280 mm² monolithic die fabbed on TSMC’s 3nm process, with a thermal design power (TDP) reaching up to 160 W — roughly 60 W more than the PS5’s chip. The CPU would pack seven to eight Zen 6c efficiency cores, plus additional Zen 6 LP cores dedicated to background tasks and the operating system, clocked up to 3 GHz. On the graphics side, the leaks describe 54 RDNA 5 compute units physically present on the die, with two disabled for manufacturing yield, leaving 52 active CUs running between 2.6 and 3.0 GHz, paired with 10 MB of L2 cache. This configuration would deliver between 34 and 40 TFLOPS of raw compute before accounting for the architectural gains of RDNA 5 over the PS5’s RDNA 2.

In relative terms, Moore’s Law Is Dead estimates that rasterization performance would be 2.5 to 3 times that of the PS5, and ray tracing between 6 and 12 times faster. If accurate, this would represent a generational leap comparable to the jump from PS3 to PS4.

The Memory: The Leap to GDDR7

The most significant change may be the memory subsystem. Leaker KeplerL2 claimed on NeoGAF that the PS6 would ship with 30 GB of DDR7, though other sources now suggest 32 GB or even 40 GB. Regardless of the final capacity, the move from PS5’s GDDR6 to GDDR7 represents a massive bandwidth increase: approximately 640 GB/s on a 160-bit bus at 32 Gbps, a 43% jump over the PS5’s 448 GB/s.

That extra bandwidth would feed an evolved version of Sony’s AI super-resolution technology. PSSR 2.0 (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), already deployed on the PS5 Pro in March 2026, uses neural networks trained on billions of frames to predict pixel appearance. Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s lead architect, confirmed in an interview with Digital Foundry that frame generation via AI is coming to PlayStation, with dedicated hardware specifications to minimize input latency.

The Release Window: 2027, 2028, or 2029?

The launch window is the most uncertain variable. KeplerL2 estimated in early 2026 that the chipset was nearly finalized and ready for fabrication, pointing to a 2027 release. However, Bloomberg published an alarming report on February 15, 2026, citing anonymous sources close to Sony’s plans, indicating that Sony was « considering delaying the launch of its next console to 2028, or even 2029, » primarily due to a persistent memory shortage.

If this delay materializes, it would be the longest gap between two PlayStation generations to date. Analyst Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis considers late 2028 the most probable launch window. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has suggested that launch plans for the PS6 and next Xbox would likely not be affected by the memory crisis, but that view remains a minority opinion among industry observers.

The Price: A Bill of Materials Nearing $1,000

The figure generating the most reaction is the price. KeplerL2 leaked a bill of materials (BOM) estimate for the PS6 approaching $960. If confirmed, this would place the launch price well above the PS5’s $500. Moore’s Law Is Dead had suggested in April 2026 a launch price of $749, but that estimate now looks optimistic given component cost inflation.

To put this in context, the Steam Machine launched by Valve in 2015 retailed at $1,049, a threshold that has become a psychological benchmark for the industry. A PS6 at $800 or more would not be technically absurd — the PS3 launched at $599 in 2006 — but it would represent a shock to the mass market, especially since the PS5 Pro, already positioned at $699, has shown the limits of premium price acceptance.

Project Canis: The Native Handheld

In parallel with the home console, Moore’s Law Is Dead detailed specifications for a next-generation handheld, codenamed « Project Canis. » It would pack a ~135 mm² monolithic die with 4 Zen 6c cores plus 2 Zen 6 LP cores, an LPDDR5X-8533 memory controller on a 192-bit bus targeting 16 GB of unified RAM, and an RDNA 5 iGPU with 16 CUs clocked at ~1.20 GHz in handheld mode and ~1.65 GHz when docked. Backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 would be supported, along with a microSD slot, haptic feedback, dual microphones, and a touchscreen.

Fabrication for this handheld is reportedly scheduled for 2027, with a potential 2028 launch alongside the main console. Moore’s Law Is Dead estimates its price between $400 and $500, positioning it in direct competition with Nintendo’s Switch 2 ($449). In docked mode, this portable would reach performance equivalent to a PS5, making it the most powerful handheld console on the market.

What Is Not Known

Sony has confirmed none of this. Not the name « Orion, » not the specifications, not the date. Backward compatibility, while logical on paper, is not guaranteed. The final memory capacity remains debated between 30, 32, and 40 GB. The launch price is purely speculative. And most critically, the release window oscillates between 2027 and 2029 depending on the source — a two-year margin of uncertainty that illustrates how fluid the project remains.

Verdict

If the leaks are accurate, the PlayStation 6 « Orion » is a machine built for the future. The move to Zen 6 and RDNA 5, combined with 30 GB+ of GDDR7 and hardware-accelerated AI super-resolution, promises a generational leap the industry has not seen in a decade. But that leap has a price. A bill of materials nearing $1,000 means Sony must choose between selling at a massive loss — as it did with the PS3, with lasting financial consequences — or imposing a launch price that excludes part of the mass market.

A potential delay to 2028 or 2029 is not necessarily bad news. It would give Sony time to let the memory shortage ease, to finalize its AI architecture, and to let the PS5 and PS5 Pro complete their full lifecycle. But it would also give Microsoft a window to launch its next Xbox first, a scenario Sony cannot ignore.

The real question is not whether the PS6 will be powerful. It will be. The question is whether Sony can make it accessible. The history of game consoles is one of compromises between performance and price. Orion, for now, tilts heavily toward performance. Whether the market follows remains to be seen.
