BMW iX5 Debuts With 435-Mile Range Claim, but Not on a Dedicated EV Platform

BMW has unveiled the first fully electric variant of its X5 sport-utility vehicle. The iX5 60 xDrive arrives with a claimed electric range of up to 435 miles, a 144 kWh battery pack, and an $79,800 starting price. The announcement, covered by Engadget on July 27, 2026, draws on specifications BMW first published on June 30, 2026. The vehicle will enter the U.S. market in the first quarter of 2027.
The Range Claim and What It Actually Means
BMW states the iX5 60 xDrive can travel up to 435 miles on a single charge. This figure, however, is a preliminary estimate produced by BMW AG using EPA testing procedures. It has not yet received final EPA certification. The same disclaimer appears on BMW’s official U.S. consumer site and in the company’s press materials: « All ranges depicted are preliminary BMW AG estimations » and « Ranges of recently released, new model year electric vehicles may not yet be fully certified by EPA. » BMW USA directs buyers to fueleconomy.gov for certified figures once available.
The European specification carries a WLTP rating of up to 845 kilometers, according to Australian outlet Zecar, though BMW’s press releases focus on the EPA-aligned 435-mile claim for the U.S. market. Whether the production vehicle matches these laboratory figures in real-world driving, particularly at highway speeds and in cold weather, remains to be tested independently.

Platform Reality: Not a Dedicated EV Architecture
Despite the headline framing in some outlets, the iX5 does not ride on a dedicated battery-electric platform. Electrek reported ahead of the debut that the vehicle uses an updated version of BMW’s existing CLAR architecture, originally developed for internal-combustion vehicles. BMWBlog confirmed this strategy in January 2026, citing BMW CTO Joachim Post: larger models such as the X5 and X7 will continue to share underpinnings with gasoline and hybrid variants because sales volumes do not justify the development cost of a bespoke EV-only platform.
This distinguishes the iX5 from the smaller iX3, which uses BMW’s Neue Klasse dedicated electric architecture. BMW says it has modified CLAR extensively to accommodate the iX5’s 800-volt electrical system, sixth-generation cylindrical battery cells, and dual-motor layout. The company asserts that packaging compromises are minimal. Independent teardowns will determine whether that claim holds.
Battery and Charging Specifications
The iX5 carries the largest battery BMW has installed in a production vehicle. U.S. models receive a 144 kWh usable pack; European models get 141 kWh, according to BMW Group’s official press release. The cells use a cell-to-pack construction that BMW says improves energy density by 20 percent over the previous generation’s prismatic design.
The 800-volt architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 460 kW. BMW claims a 10-to-80-percent charge takes 22 minutes, and 10 minutes on a high-power station adds an estimated 170 miles of range. On AC, the onboard charger handles up to 15.4 kW. The vehicle also supports bidirectional charging, enabling vehicle-to-load, vehicle-to-home, and vehicle-to-vehicle power transfer.
A charging preconditioning system warms or cools the battery when navigation is set to a DC fast charger. BMW Maps incorporates AI-driven route planning that factors in predicted charging speeds, station reliability, and location data from previous cycles.

Performance and Weight
The iX5 60 xDrive produces 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque (805 Nm) from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. BMW estimates a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph, electronically limited. An asynchronous motor at the front axle produces 245 hp and can decouple during light loads to improve efficiency.
The trade-off for the large battery is mass. Industry observers, including Zecar, estimate the vehicle’s curb weight at approximately 3,000 kilograms, or roughly 6,600 pounds. BMW has revised the suspension and chassis to manage the added weight, separating key suspension functions and repositioning adaptive dampers and anti-roll components. How these changes affect handling and ride quality relative to the lighter gasoline-powered X5 will require independent road testing.
Pricing and Availability
BMW has set the following U.S. MSRP figures, before the $1,450 destination and handling charge:
- BMW X5 40: $69,800
- BMW X5 40 xDrive: $72,100
- BMW X5 50e xDrive (plug-in hybrid): $77,500
- BMW iX5 60 xDrive (fully electric): $79,800
Production begins in August 2026 at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, making the iX5 the first fully electric vehicle built at that facility. The gasoline and plug-in hybrid variants arrive first, in October 2026. The electric iX5 follows in the first quarter of 2027.

Interior and Technology
The cabin carries over the Neue Klasse design language seen in newer BMW models. A 17.9-inch central display runs BMW Operating System X. The BMW Panoramic Vision projects information across the lower windshield. A 3D head-up display is available, and an optional 14.6-inch passenger screen allows the front-seat passenger to stream content independently.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Over-the-air software updates are supported, and BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades allow owners to add features post-purchase through subscription or one-time payments.
The Full Powertrain Lineup
The fifth-generation X5 offers five distinct drivetrain types, depending on market:
- X5 40 / 40 xDrive: 3.0-liter inline-six with 48V mild hybrid, 394 hp
- X5 50e xDrive: Plug-in hybrid, 483 hp, 44 miles of estimated electric-only range
- iX5 60 xDrive: Fully electric, 570 hp, 435-mile estimated range
- Future V8 M Performance variant: Scheduled for later in 2027
- iX5 Hydrogen: Fuel-cell version announced for future production, though BMW Australia has already ruled it out for that market
What Remains Unclear
The 435-mile range figure is preliminary and may shift after EPA certification. Real-world efficiency, particularly given the vehicle’s estimated 6,600-pound curb weight, is unknown. Independent range and charging tests have not yet been published.
The decision to use an updated combustion-era platform rather than a dedicated EV architecture raises questions about interior space efficiency, weight distribution, and long-term serviceability compared with rivals built on bespoke electric underpinnings. BMW’s argument is economic; whether consumers notice the difference in daily use remains to be seen.
Finally, the iX5 Hydrogen has been announced but lacks a firm production date or market availability outside of select regions.
