Insta360 officially launched the Luna Ultra on June 10, 2026, marking the Shenzhen-based manufacturer’s first dedicated entry into the gimbal camera category. Co-engineered with Leica, the dual-lens 8K camera is priced at $769.99 in the U.S. and positions itself as a direct challenger to DJI’s long-standing dominance in the pocket cinema space. The announcement, first detailed by PetaPixel and confirmed through Insta360’s official press release, introduces a device that combines a 1-inch 8K sensor, a detachable OLED touchscreen, and up to 12× zoom in a body weighing just over 200 grams.

The launch event itself was held at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany—a symbolic choice underscoring the six-year partnership between the two companies, which has now produced five co-developed products. Marius Eschweiler, VP of Business Unit Mobile at Leica Camera AG, called the launch « more than a new product announcement, » framing it as the convergence of « optical heritage with a new generation of intelligent imaging technology. »

What the Dual-Lens System Delivers

The defining hardware feature of the Luna Ultra is its dual-lens architecture. The primary camera pairs a Leica Summicron lens with a 1-inch CMOS sensor capable of 8K video capture. A secondary telephoto lens sits alongside it, built around a 1/1.3-inch sensor with an F2.0 aperture, delivering what Insta360 describes as « natural bokeh across five focal lengths. » The zoom system is hybrid: users can digitally zoom up to 12×, with 6× of that range being lossless. The 35mm equivalent focal lengths are 20mm for the main lens and 60mm for the telephoto. Minimum focusing distances are 9cm and 15cm respectively, making the telephoto lens viable for close-up and macro-style work, according to the official hardware specifications.

This dual-lens approach is a significant departure from the single-lens design of the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, which relies on a 20mm equivalent F2.0 lens with no optical zoom capability beyond a 2× digital crop in 4K mode. The Pocket 3, which retails for $499 and has recently seen promotional pricing as low as $419, has dominated the category since its late-2023 launch. The Luna Ultra undercuts a fully accessorized Pocket 3 setup while offering substantially higher resolution and optical flexibility.

8K Video, Dolby Vision, and Professional Color Workflows

On the video front, the Luna Ultra records 8K at 30fps in Dolby Vision, with support for 10-bit I-Log capture to preserve color information for post-production grading. Insta360 claims up to 14 stops of dynamic range, which the company says preserves « rich detail in both highlights and shadows. » The full resolution and frame-rate matrix is extensive. Standard video mode supports 8K (16:9 and 2.35:1) at 30/25/24fps, 4K at up to 120fps, 3K square and vertical formats at 60fps, 2.7K at 120fps, and 1080p at up to 240fps for slow-motion work, as detailed in the shooting specifications manual.

PureVideo Mode, designed for low-light performance, caps at 4K60fps but promises reduced noise and improved brightness. The Triple AI Chip powering these features also drives the camera’s overall image pipeline and AI tracking capabilities. For photography, the camera outputs 37MP UltraPhotos and 200MP Scenic Panorama images. Photo formats include JPG and JPG+RAW, with a shutter speed range of 1/8000s to 30s in photo mode. The ISO range spans 100 to 6400 for both stills and video.

Color science is another Leica-infused pillar. The Luna Ultra ships with three Leica color profiles—Leica Natural, Leica Vivid, and Leica Chrome—alongside ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) support for professional color workflows. Built-in timecode enables multi-camera synchronization compatible with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.

Stabilization, AI Tracking, and the Detachable Screen

Mechanical stabilization comes via a 3-axis gimbal with a controllable rotation range of -57° to 235° on the pan axis, -57° to 120° on pitch, and -50° to 50° on roll. Maximum control speed is rated at 210°/s with a jitter suppression of ±0.005°. Electronic image stabilization works in tandem with the mechanical gimbal, according to the hardware specs.

The tracking system, branded Deep Track 5.0, adds Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking, Group Tracking, and Smart Framing. Perhaps the most talked-about hardware innovation is the detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen. With a resolution of 318×564 pixels and a peak brightness of 1000 nits, the screen can be removed from the camera body and used as a wireless remote monitor with HD transmission up to 20 meters. The detachable module houses its own 210mAh battery and connects via Wi-Fi 4.0, while the main unit supports Wi-Fi 6.0.

Battery, Storage, and Physical Design

The Luna Ultra measures 52.4×169.9×38.5mm and weighs 233g in Cosmic Black, or 235g in Stellar White. It is not dustproof, waterproof, or splashproof—Insta360 explicitly warns users to avoid exposure to water and sand. The main unit carries a 1550mAh battery rated for up to 240 minutes of 1080p24fps recording with the screen and Wi-Fi turned off. Fast charging via USB-C 3.0 brings the battery to 80% in approximately 23 minutes using a 30W PD3.0 PPS charger, with a full charge taking roughly 38 minutes.

Internal storage is 47GB, expandable via microSD up to 1TB. The camera records MP4 files in H.265 at a maximum bitrate of 120Mbps. Four microphones are built in—three on the main unit and one on the detachable screen—along with a physical wind guard for outdoor recording.

The Creator Bundle and Accessory Ecosystem

Beyond the standard $769.99 package, Insta360 offers a Creator Bundle priced at $969.99. This bundle adds a Mic Pro Transmitter, an extra battery, and the full accessory set including the Protective Cover, Wind Guard, 1/4″ Thread Handle, and Wrist Strap. Insta360’s Mic Pro and Mic Air systems are directly compatible for single or dual-transmitter wireless audio setups.

How It Stacks Up Against the DJI Osmo Pocket 3

The Luna Ultra enters a market largely defined by DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3, a $499 single-lens gimbal camera built around a 1-inch CMOS sensor with 4K/120fps capability, a 2-inch rotating OLED screen, and ActiveTrack 6.0. The spec-sheet differences are stark. Where the Pocket 3 tops out at 4K resolution with no optical zoom, the Luna Ultra pushes to 8K30fps and offers genuine dual-lens optical flexibility with 6× lossless zoom. The Pocket 3 has no internal storage and relies entirely on microSD cards, while the Luna Ultra ships with 47GB built in. The Pocket 3’s screen rotates but remains physically attached to the body; the Luna Ultra’s screen detaches entirely for remote operation up to 20 meters away.

Battery life favors the Luna Ultra on paper—up to 240 minutes versus the Pocket 3’s 166 minutes—though real-world 4K recording times on both cameras land closer to 135–200 minutes depending on settings. The Pocket 3’s strength remains its sealed, all-in-one portability and deep integration with the DJI Mic 2 ecosystem. The Luna Ultra counters with Leica color science, higher resolution, modular expandability, and a price point that undercuts what a fully accessorized Pocket 3 setup typically costs. As one comparison noted, the Luna Ultra is « a significant step up from the Pocket 3 in almost every area » for users considering an upgrade.

What the Launch Signals for Insta360

For Insta360, the Luna Ultra represents a category expansion beyond its core 360° and action camera business.
