Mortal Shell 2 Removes the Stamina Bar and Adds Over 60 Dungeons to a Compact Open World
By OFOKI TECH | August 12, 2026
The first Mortal Shell, released in August 2020, was a modest success. Developed by Cold Symmetry, a team that broke away from AAA development in 2017, the game sold one million copies by September 2023. It was deliberately small: four playable Shells, a handful of weapons, and a compact world that compensated for its limited scope with atmosphere and difficulty. The sequel, releasing on August 20, 2026, eight days from now, is not modest. It features an interconnected open world, over 60 dungeons, eight playable Shells, and a combat system that removes the stamina bar entirely.
No Stamina, More Aggression
The most significant mechanical change is the removal of the stamina resource. In the first game, stamina governed attacks, dodges, and movement. In Mortal Shell 2, players can attack, run, and dodge freely. The new system emphasizes posture-breaking and critical strikes: break an enemy’s posture, and you can unleash a powerful critical hit or instant execution.
The « Hardening » mechanic returns, allowing players to temporarily turn to stone to negate damage. It can be activated mid-attack, mid-dodge, or even mid-air. The cooldown is short, but the timing requirement is precise.
The Shells
Players control the Harbinger, who can possess fallen warriors called Shells. Confirmed Shells include Eredrim the Venerable (heavy knight), Proxima the Broodseeker (horned female warrior with a grappling hook arm), and Tiel the Acolyte (agile assassin with stealth abilities). Harros the Vassal returns as the tutorial Shell but cannot be equipped past the prologue. Solomon, the Scholar from the first game, does not return.
Each Shell has unique abilities that can be upgraded at the Marrow Keep by speaking with Zhirelle, the Shellkeeper. The Bonding system allows players to unlock ability upgrades and experience each Shell’s memories.
World Structure
The game takes place in a compact, interconnected open world with over 60 dungeons. Fast travel is handled through Beacons, which function similarly to bonfires in Dark Souls. The central hub is the Marrow Keep. The game requires over 30GB of storage, more than double the original’s 12GB, suggesting a significantly larger experience.
The world includes derelict temples of ancient deities, forbidden forests, icy graves, and citadels carved from bone. The Harbinger must reclaim the Undermether’s stolen eggs, guarded by grotesque creatures.
Weapons and Combat
New weapon types include scythe, greatsword, greataxe, crossbow, and hand cannon. Combat is bolstered by powerful sidearms and extensive upgrade options. The removal of stamina is the most divisive change in the community. Some players argue it makes the game faster and more aggressive. Others worry it removes the deliberate pacing that defined the original.
Editions and Early Access
The Standard Edition costs $49.99. The Devout Edition at $59.99 includes three days of early access (starting August 17) and eight Obsidian Shell skins. A physical Revered Edition for PS5 includes a steelbook, artbook, and fine art prints. Two exclusive Harbinger skins are rewarded to those who pre-order.
