Apple’s 2026 Smart Home Push: Home Hub, HomePod Mini 2, and Apple TV 4K

Apple is preparing its most aggressive smart home product launch in years. After years of relative quiet in the category, the company is expected to release a new HomePod mini, an updated Apple TV 4K, and an entirely new product category: a smart home hub with a display. All three devices have reportedly been ready for months, but Apple has held them back until its revamped Siri AI is ready to ship.
The Software Bottleneck
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the hardware for both the new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini has been « done for months » and is already being tested internally by Apple employees. The holdup is entirely software-related. Apple has been rebuilding Siri to function more like a modern AI chatbot, with persistent conversations, contextual memory, multi-step actions across apps, and on-screen awareness. The company originally planned to ship these features in iOS 26.4 earlier this year, but reliability issues pushed the timeline back to iOS 27 this fall.
NotebookCheck reported that Apple is timing the launch of the new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini for fall 2026, around the readiness of the next-generation Siri. Both devices feature internal processor upgrades designed to support the advanced capabilities of the upcoming software ecosystem. This represents the longest gap between Apple TV updates in the product’s history. The current Apple TV 4K launched in October 2022, while the HomePod mini has not received a hardware refresh since its original debut in October 2020.
Apple TV 4K: A17 Pro and On-Device AI
The next Apple TV 4K is expected to feature the A17 Pro chip, the same 3nm processor that powered the iPhone 15 Pro. This is a significant jump from the A15 Bionic in the current model and is the oldest Apple silicon that supports Apple Intelligence. The upgrade is expected to bring 8GB of RAM, double the current model’s 4GB, enabling on-device AI processing for the first time on an Apple TV.
For gamers, the A17 Pro also opens the door to console-quality titles with hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The device is expected to include Apple’s custom N1 networking chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support. Gurman has noted that users should « not expect much » in terms of visible design changes. The exterior will likely remain the same squircle form factor in black plastic. A remote refresh is possible but not confirmed.
HomePod Mini 2: S9 Chip and Siri AI via Cloud
The HomePod mini refresh, codenamed B525, is expected to replace its aging S5 chip with a more capable processor from the S-series family, likely the S9 or S10. AppleInsider reported that the upgrade will include a second-generation U1 ultra-wideband chip for more accurate device detection and handoff, plus the N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
However, there is an important caveat. TechTimes noted that the S9 chip does not have enough processing power to run Apple Intelligence locally. Any AI features on the HomePod mini will likely rely on cloud streaming through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, or offloading tasks to a connected iPhone. This makes the HomePod mini a satellite node in Apple’s smart home ecosystem rather than a standalone AI device.
The Home Hub: A New Product Category
The most ambitious of Apple’s smart home plans is the Home Hub, a device with a roughly 7-inch square display that can be wall-mounted or placed on a speaker base resembling a HomePod mini. MacRumors detailed two variants in development: one codenamed J490 with a display mounted on a half-dome speaker base, and another codenamed J491 designed to attach to a magnetic wall-mount system.
The Hub will run an operating system internally referred to as « Charismatic, » possibly branded as homeOS when it launches. The interface is described as a cross between watchOS and the iPhone’s StandBy mode, with customizable widgets for weather, home controls, photo slideshows, and upcoming events. A built-in 1080p camera will enable FaceTime calls, and Face ID will be used for authentication and profile switching.
Notably, the Hub will ship with an A18 chip, making it capable of full on-device Apple Intelligence. This positions it as the central brain of Apple’s smart home ecosystem, with the HomePod mini and Apple TV serving as satellite nodes. Apple has also trademarked « homeOS » through a shell company in multiple countries.
Apple’s Security Camera
Apple is also designing its own indoor security camera, which could launch alongside the Hub or at a later date. MacRumors reported that HomeKit Secure Video cameras are getting upgrades in iOS 27, including 4K recording, AI summaries, and the ability to stitch video from different cameras together for tracking a single event across rooms. All of these features would be ideal for Apple-created hardware.
