PlayStation 6: Leaked Specs Point to 40 TFLOPS, a Handheld Companion, and a 2028 Launch Delayed by the Memory Crisis

Sony has not announced a PlayStation 6. The company has not confirmed a release date, a price, or even the name. Yet the volume of leaks surrounding the next console has reached a point where a coherent picture is emerging, built from supply chain sources, AMD roadmap documents, and hardware leakers with established track records. The consensus points to a console codenamed Orion, built around AMD’s Zen 6 CPU and RDNA 5 GPU, with a performance target that would place it roughly 2.5 to 3 times above the base PS5 in raw rasterization and 6 to 12 times above in ray tracing. The problem is not the silicon. It is the memory.
The Orion Architecture
The PlayStation 6’s system-on-chip is expected to be a semi-custom design from AMD, continuing the partnership that has powered every PlayStation since the PS4. Leaked documents reviewed by TweakTown describe the Orion APU as a monolithic die built on TSMC’s 3nm process, with a thermal design power of up to 160W. That is roughly 60W higher than the PS5’s chip.
The CPU side is expected to carry seven to eight Zen 6c efficiency cores plus dedicated Zen 6 low-power cores for background and OS tasks, clocked up to 3GHz. On the graphics side, the leaks describe 54 physical RDNA 5 compute units with two disabled for yield, leaving 52 active CUs clocked between 2.6GHz and 3.0GHz, backed by 10MB of L2 cache. That configuration reportedly lands between 34 and 40 TFLOPS of compute throughput, before accounting for RDNA 5’s architectural gains over the PS5’s RDNA 2 design.

The memory shift may be more significant than the compute. Multiple sources, including KeplerL2, point to a move from GDDR6 to GDDR7, with capacity estimates ranging from 30GB to 32GB on a 160-bit bus running at 32Gbps. That works out to roughly 640GB/s of memory bandwidth, a 43% increase over the PS5’s 448GB/s. The extra bandwidth is earmarked for an upgraded AI upscaler, an evolution of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution system introduced with the PS5 Pro, sometimes referred to in leaks as PSSR 2.0.
Project Amethyst and the AMD Partnership
In October 2025, Sony and AMD made their collaboration public under the name Project Amethyst. The partnership is not merely about Sony buying chips from AMD. It is a co-development effort where Sony contributes machine learning R&D while AMD leads on hardware. Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, and AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh have outlined three technology pillars that will likely define the PS6’s graphics pipeline.
The first is Neural Arrays, which allow compute units within shader engines to collaborate as a unified AI engine for image reconstruction and denoising. The second is Radiance Cores, dedicated hardware blocks for unified light transport that free the CPU and enable real-time path tracing. The third is Universal Compression, which evaluates and compresses all data types before memory access, reducing bandwidth usage. Cerny has confirmed that a reimplementation of AMD’s FSR 4 upscaler, adapted for PS5 Pro as the next evolution of PSSR, is already in development for 2026 titles.
The Memory Crisis and the Delay to 2028 or 2029
The most concrete news about the PS6 is that it has been delayed. In February 2026, Bloomberg reported that Sony was considering pushing the console’s debut to 2028 or even 2029, a « major upset » to the company’s strategy. The cause is a global shortage of memory chips, driven by AI data centers from companies like Nvidia and Google buying up production capacity. The industry has dubbed it RAMmageddon.

Sony CFO Lin Tao addressed the issue in the company’s financial report, stating that Sony is negotiating with suppliers to secure enough supply, and that the hardware sales strategy can be adjusted flexibly. The company shipped 8 million PS5 units during the holiday period, a 15.7% decrease year-over-year, but software revenue from the PlayStation Store reached a record high. The message is clear: Sony can afford to wait.
Analyst David Gibson of MST International predicted in January 2026 that rising memory prices would not impact short-term performance thanks to existing inventory, but could become an issue in the fiscal year ending March 2027. The delay also breaks Sony’s traditional seven-year console cycle. The PS4 launched in 2013, the PS5 in 2020. A 2028 PS6 would make the PS5’s lifecycle eight years, and a 2029 launch would push it to nine.
Project Canis: The Handheld Companion
Alongside the main console, leakers describe a companion handheld codenamed Project Canis. Bloomberg first reported in 2024 that Sony was exploring a gaming handheld. Since then, leaked AMD documentation and multiple leakers have added hardware detail. Sony has also updated its PS5 developer kits to prioritize Low Power Mode, with documentation suggesting developers ensure their games can run on just eight CPU threads. Multiple sources have interpreted this as Sony quietly preparing the software ecosystem for handheld hardware.
The leaked specs for Canis point to a monolithic APU built on TSMC 3nm of approximately 135mm². The CPU would use 4x Zen 6c cores for games plus 2x low-power Zen 6 cores dedicated to the OS. The GPU would carry 16 RDNA 5 compute units, clocking around 1.20 GHz in handheld mode and 1.65 GHz when docked. Memory would be LPDDR5X on a 192-bit controller, with support for up to 48GB theoretically, though developers consulted on the matter suggested anything between 24 and 36GB would be necessary to run next-gen games with features like UE5’s Nanite.

Performance targets are roughly half the raw rasterization power of the base PS5, but with notably stronger ray tracing performance due to RDNA 5’s architectural improvements. Docked rasterization could be around 0.55 to 0.75 times the PS5, while ray tracing could land at 1.3 to 2.6 times the PS5. The device is said to support backward compatibility with PS5 and PS4 titles, and would include a MicroSD slot, an M.2 SSD slot, and USB-C with video output for docked play.
Moore’s Law Is Dead has claimed that Canis is designed to run PS5 and PS4 titles out of the box, and that the Low Power Mode Sony added to PS5 firmware exists specifically to validate which games can run acceptably on the handheld’s smaller power envelope before Canis ships. If accurate, that would make Canis far more of a native PlayStation library device than any prior Sony handheld. IBTimes has cited leaks suggesting Canis could enter manufacturing around mid-2027 with a release targeted for fall 2027, potentially arriving before the main Orion console.
Price and the Triple-Strategy Rumor
No official price exists, but a leaked bill-of-materials estimate rose from about $760 in March 2026 to roughly $960 by late June 2026, according to Shattered.io. Analysts expect Sony to try to hold retail pricing under $999, though a four-figure price is plausible given the PS5 Pro already sits at $899.99. Some rumors suggest a three-tier strategy: a PS6 Lite, a PS6 Standard, and a PS6 Pro or Orion model, with the handheld as a fourth pillar.
