Xiaomi’s First Foldable with a Wide Screen Will Debut at IFA Berlin

By OFOKI TECH | August 26, 2026

Xiaomi will attend IFA Berlin for the first time in early September 2026. The company has confirmed it will showcase a new foldable device with a wide-screen form factor, distinct from the tall, narrow design of its existing Mix Fold series. The announcement represents Xiaomi’s attempt to compete directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide and Google’s Pixel Fold in the emerging book-style foldable category.

The Form Factor

Xiaomi’s current foldable, the Mix Fold 5, uses a tall, narrow cover screen similar to Samsung’s older Fold designs. The new device, which Xiaomi has not officially named, will adopt a wider, shorter shape. Leaked renders and prototype images show a device that opens to reveal a nearly square inner display, closer to a 4:3 or 16:10 aspect ratio than the 21:9 panels on previous Mix Folds.

The wider form factor is better suited to multitasking, document reading, and video content. It also makes the cover screen more usable for typing and one-handed operation. Samsung’s Z Fold 8 Wide, which adopted the same shape in July 2026, has received generally positive feedback for its improved cover screen usability, though some reviewers noted the wider body is harder to grip one-handed.

What Xiaomi Has Confirmed

Xiaomi has not disclosed specifications, pricing, or a release date. The company has only confirmed its presence at IFA Berlin and teased a « new form factor » for its foldable line. The device is expected to run HyperOS, Xiaomi’s Android-based operating system, with optimizations for the wider screen.

The Mix Fold 5 Context

The Mix Fold 5 launched in China in July 2026 and has not been released globally. It features a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 7.98-inch inner display, and a Leica-tuned camera system. The device is priced competitively in China but lacks the global distribution and software localization of Samsung’s Fold line.

Xiaomi’s decision to develop a wide-screen variant suggests the company believes the tall, narrow form factor is limiting its appeal outside China. The Mix Fold 5’s 21:9 inner screen is excellent for vertical scrolling and reading but less optimal for video and productivity tasks that benefit from horizontal space.

The IFA Strategy

IFA Berlin, held annually in early September, is Europe’s largest consumer electronics trade show. Samsung, LG, Sony, and other major brands use it to showcase products ahead of the holiday shopping season. Xiaomi’s decision to attend for the first time signals an intent to expand its European presence, particularly in the premium smartphone segment where it has historically struggled against Samsung and Apple.

The timing is deliberate. IFA 2026 falls between Samsung’s July Unpacked event and Apple’s September iPhone announcement. It gives Xiaomi a window to generate buzz for its foldable without competing directly against the two largest smartphone launches of the year.

What Is Not Known

Xiaomi has not confirmed whether the wide-screen foldable will be a new tier in the Mix Fold line or a replacement for the existing form factor. It has not disclosed processor, battery, camera, or pricing details. Global availability is also uncertain. Xiaomi typically launches foldables in China first, with international releases following months later if at all.

Verdict

Xiaomi’s wide-screen foldable is a necessary move. The tall, narrow form factor that defined the first generation of book-style foldables is being abandoned by the industry. Samsung’s Z Fold 8 Wide, Google’s Pixel Fold, and now Xiaomi’s unnamed device all point to the same conclusion: buyers want a cover screen they can actually use and an inner display that resembles a tablet rather than a tall phone.

Whether Xiaomi can execute is another question. The company’s foldables have been technically competent but culturally invisible outside China. They lack the marketing budget, retail presence, and carrier partnerships that Samsung and Apple use to sell premium devices. A wider screen does not solve those problems.

If Xiaomi prices the device aggressively, undercutting the Z Fold 8 Wide by several hundred dollars, it could find a niche among price-conscious buyers who want the foldable experience without the Samsung tax. But if it prices the device near Samsung’s $1,900 level, it will struggle to justify itself against a brand with better software support, wider availability, and a proven track record in foldables.

Xiaomi has the hardware. It needs the ecosystem.
