Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4: New Chip, Blood Pressure Monitoring, and a Redesigned Ultra

Apple’s fall event is roughly one month away, and the Apple Watch lineup is due for its annual refresh. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in early September. While the standard Series 12 is rumored to receive a new chip after a one-year pause, the Ultra 4 is shaping up to be a more substantial overhaul, with supply chain reports pointing to a thinner titanium case, a ring-pattern sensor array, and blood pressure monitoring.
A New Chip After Three Years of Stagnation
The Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Series 11 all used variants of the same underlying silicon, identified internally as part of the « Watch7 » family. For the Series 12, Apple code leaks have identified the device as part of the « Watch8 » family, suggesting a genuine hardware leap rather than another incremental refresh. Macworld reported that the 2026 models carry internal identifiers N237, N238, and N240, and will be powered by a new CPU identified as T8320.
The last time Apple introduced a genuinely new processor for the Apple Watch was with the Series 9 in 2023. That upgrade brought faster CPU and GPU performance. For the Series 12, the new chip is expected to enable deeper integration of Apple Intelligence features into watchOS 27, which is critical as Apple pushes Siri AI across its ecosystem.
Battery Life as a Priority
Multiple sources, including a known leaker on Weibo, have indicated that Apple is focused on increasing battery life for the Series 12. The current Series 11 is rated for up to 24 hours in standard mode or 38 hours in Low Power Mode. Any meaningful gain would push the Series 12 closer to two full days of standard use, a threshold that would change how users charge and wear the device. The efficiency gains are expected to come from the new chipset rather than a larger physical battery.
Health Sensors and Blood Pressure
The most significant health upgrade rumored for the Series 12 line is blood pressure monitoring. DigiTimes reported that Apple has submitted a new high blood pressure notification feature to the FDA for review. The current hypertension feature in watchOS 26 uses the optical heart sensor to analyze blood vessel responses over 30-day periods and notify users of patterns. The rumored new feature appears to be a more refined or clinically validated implementation of that underlying hardware.
For the Ultra 4 specifically, DigiTimes claimed a « full redesign » with a « significant upgrade to sensing functions. » Supply chain reports describe eight sensors arranged in a ring pattern on the back of the device, replacing the current flat sensor disc. This reorganization is expected to improve contact during movement and potentially faster readings during workouts. Market observers cited by DigiTimes estimate the overhaul could push Apple Watch shipments up by 20% to 30% compared to 2025 levels.
Touch ID: In Development, But Possibly Not Ready
Earlier in 2026, Macworld’s Filipe Espósito discovered references to « AppleMesa » (Apple’s internal codename for Touch ID) in leaked code for 2026 Apple Watch models. This led to speculation that fingerprint authentication could be integrated into the side button, Digital Crown, or Action Button. However, the picture has become murkier in recent weeks. MacRumors reported that Apple is prioritizing larger batteries and more advanced health sensors over fingerprint authentication, citing a prominent Chinese leaker who pushed back on Touch ID speculation. The current consensus is that Touch ID for Apple Watch remains in development but may not ship with the Ultra 4 or Series 12.
Ultra 4 Design Changes
The Ultra 4 is expected to break the design pattern that has remained largely unchanged since the original Ultra launched in 2022. Supply chain reports point to a titanium case that is roughly 15% slimmer than the current model, making the 49mm watch more comfortable for all-day wear and sleep tracking. The Digital Crown and Action Button are expected to remain, and the titanium construction stays. What remains unclear is how dramatic the visual transformation will actually be. AppleInsider noted that earlier plans for a more radical overhaul were tied to microLED display technology, which Apple has since delayed. Without microLED, the redesign may be more evolutionary than revolutionary.
Pricing for the Ultra 4 is expected to remain at $799, the same launch price as every previous Apple Watch Ultra model, though some speculation points to a possible increase to $849 or $899 depending on the scope of upgrades.
